California Work Opportunities and Responsibility to Kids
The CalWORKs program provides temporary financial assistance and employment focused services to families with minor children who have income and property below State maximum limits for their family size.
Touchstone provides mental health services to CalWORKS recipients who request therapy to help them overcome mental and emotional barriers to work. These problems often include:
* Feelings of dependency and powerlessness
* Depression and low self-esteem
* Anxiety and social phobia
* Destructive relationships
* Parenting issues
* History of abuse or trauma
* Addiction and recovery concerns
Therapy gives clients an opportunity to discuss difficulties and fears that often surface when one is entering the workforce or returning after a long time. It can provide support to try new and more potentially successful avenues to employment.
CalWORKs parents are referred to Touchstone following an interview with the county liaison, after which the client is contacted by Mary Holbrook, the CalWORKs Coordinator at Touchstone, for a one-hour assessment to determine the client's therapeutic needs and hopes. A number of county forms are also completed at this time.
Following the assessment, the client will receive a phone call from the staff therapist to whom the client has been assigned. Assignments are made on the basis of the client's needs, the therapist's expertise, and the scheduling requirements of both. Therapy is authorized for sixteen weeks, which may be extended upon the therapist's request and the liaison's agreement. Clients who would benefit from a longer period of therapy are encouraged to apply for and use their Medi-Cal benefit. Clients whose problems are Likely to prevent them from working altogether may be helped to obtain disability benefits.
